Building Tower Bridge

The construction of Tower Bridge began on the 21st of June 1886 and was opened on the 30th of June 1894. This eight year period involved 11,000 tons of steel and 432 construction workers. Cornish granite and Portland Stone were used to decorate the bridge and give it a more exquisite appearance.
Tower Bridge was the first bridge of its kind, combining elements of suspension and bascule bridges. It is widely considered the most famous bascule bridge to date.
