Puritan Interregnum

By Dakota Payette

The Puritan Interregnum was a during the Glorious Revolution in England and Wales. Oliver Cromwell had overthrown the monarch and installed a parliamentary and military rule, saying that it was what the people of England wanted. The interregnum called upon for the people of England to follow a very strict form of Christianity. Another part of the interregnum silenced the many theaters around the city of London, holding them to a complete halt. It was not until Richard Cromwell gave up the title as Lord Protector, which allowed for Charles II to come back from exile to claim the throne, that the interregnum was lifted.
